Deadly Beauty Products In Your Bathroom
By AshleyRB
As shocking as this may sound, hair products and cosmetics are not required to be tested by the Food and Drug Administration. This means that millions of people are being exposed to harmful chemicals on a daily basis without even realizing it.
People have become accustomed to hearing about all of the things in their everyday lives that are known to cause cancer. Ignoring the problem is the worst possible thing a person can do. Instead, the public needs to inform themselves on what they are putting on their bodies.
Hair Products
Sodium Laureth Sulfate is one hazardous ingredient that is in the homes of millions of Americans. This chemical is used to make shampoos and soaps foam up. Research has shown that it causes irritation with repeated use, strips the skin of moisture, and can actually cause hair loss. There are other chemicals similar to this substance such as ammonium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Sodium Laureth Sulfate has been listed as a possible carcinogen.
Another ingredient typical found in hair mousses, conditioners, make up, and lotions is called propylene glycol. This chemical breaks down cellular structure and breaks down proteins. This is the main ingredient found in antifreeze. The Environmental Protection Agency requires workers who handle this chemical wear gloves and goggles to protect themselves from this its toxic effects. It may cause brain, liver, and kidney problems with long term usage.
Formaldehyde, unfortunately, is more common in hair products than the public would like to believe. It is typically disguised with the names DMDM Hydantoin or Imidazolidinyl Urea. This ingredient has also but the subject of controversy in regards to the Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Formaldehyde is extremely irritating to the lungs, nose, eyes, and many other body parts. It is a known carcinogen and it can lower your immune system.
Cosmetics
One type of ingredient that rarely ever raises an eyebrow are fragrances. While it may sound completely harmless do not be fooled. Fragrances can consist of thousands of chemicals used in order to get a specific scent. The shocking truth is that many of these chemicals are carcinogen and may be very potent. It is much better to just pick up their unscented counterparts when grocery shopping.
Daily make up wearers more than likely never think twice about what their cosmetics consist of, even though they are at the most risk. The daily exposure to chemicals in their cosmetics put them more at risk. A perfect example of this is Lead Acetate in cosmetics. This substance is another know carcinogen, a danger to the environment, causes birth defects, and can hinder fertility.
These are just a handful of examples of the toxic garbage being sold on a daily basis. The public has the right to know what they are really being sold. These deadly substances have no business being sold in everyday products. The only way to get these products off the store shelves is to inform as many people as possible and prevent them for being purchased. Then maybe manufactures will finally get the message.

Sadly, I can almost guarantee you at least half of these ingredients are in your cupboard.
Nice hub and I agree with you I stopped using any shampoo with sulfate in it and my hair has never looked better. It really strips your hair of natural oil and if you have color treated hair like mine it strips the color. Thanks for sharing this information. Cheers.
Same here! I have replaced shampoo with a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse. It makes my hair so smooth and easy to style!
Very important and interesting hub! The chemical substances is a runaway market and it is so hard to keep track of all harmful ingredients that is in everyday products!
I've been using organic shampoo for over a year now and my hair is shinier and no split ends which my hairdresser used to complain a lot LOL

It's great that people are becoming more aware of the products they are using. It is difficult to keep track of all of the crazy chemicals being used in our everyday products, but it's worth it to stay informed.
congratulations .... very useful hub. Many of these ingredients have also been linked to cancer. Take care.
My eyes lately have been getting very puffy. I stopped wearing some of the new eyeshadows I had and they went back to normal. Thank you for an informative and valuable hub on makeup. I will be more careful what I purchase in the future. Congrats on your nomination also.
Thank you for this really interesting, and alarming, hub. You have gone to a lot of trouble to find all these undesirable product ingredients, and we should all take time to read the labels very carefully.
Congrats on this Hubnugget nomination. Nice work.

Yes diluted vinegar rinse helps get rid of dandruff! I wrote a hub about it :)
Thanks for sharing. It's also not FDA required that products be tested on animals for cosmetics, fragrances, and household cleaners.
It's atrocious what animals who are caged in testing labs have to go through.
To find out what companies do and do not test on animals, this is a great site: http://www.caringconsumer.com
(The site seems to be down at the moment, but check back.)
